UNIC Bujumbura co-organized with the UN Gender Focal Points and the Ministry of National Solidarity, Human Rights and Gender the national ceremonies commemorating International Women's Day. In Burundi the day was officially celebrated on 18 March 2006, in Muyinga Province, north of the country under a national theme, "Land Inheritage, an inalienable right for the Burundian Woman". The ceremonies were hosted by the President of the Republic accompanied by his spouse. The Resident Coordinator made a speech on behalf of the UNCT, and the main speech was made by the President of the Republic himself. A huge public attended the ceremonies. Cultural shows including traditional dances and sketches were presented by Muyinga local groups.
